Allscripts will work with Vidyo to integrate video visits directly into its patient portal, the EHR vendor announced today. Users of Allscript's FollowMyHealth portal will be able to launch a video consultation over the platform directly in the app or desktop interface.

“Allscripts strives to continually provide a fully engaged patient platform, giving patients and their families the ability to stay connected to their physicians, allowing them to be active contributors to their care,” Allscripts General Manager Kim South said in a statement. “Vidyo’s integrated video collaboration platform embedded into the Allscripts FollowMyHealth workflow is the ideal solution for patients and physicians to conveniently connect face-to-face over the web or our mobile app.”

Vidyo is not a telemedicine vendor, per se, but the video conferencing company has long targeted the healthcare market because, unlike services like Skype, videoconferencing over Vidyo is encrypted, which makes it HIPAA compliant. Vidyo has worked with a wide range of healthcare stakeholders, including Philips, the California Telehealth Network, Mercy Health, Teva Pharmaceuticals, Sutter Health, HealthSpot, Miami Children’s Hospital, UPMC, Massachusetts General Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, and UnitedHealthGroup.

“We are thrilled to announce our integration with Allscripts’ FollowMyHealth patient engagement platform,” Vidyo CEO Eran Westman said in a statement. “Vidyo helps create a system of connected care that is more accessible to more people, and is highly interoperable with any EHR system and patient portal. Vidyo’s technology is easily embedded into any application in order to make engagement continuous and simplify the widespread clinical adoption of telehealth.”

Allscript's FollowMyHealth patient engagement platform was originally developed by startup Jardogs, which Allscripts acquired in 2013. It allows patients to securely communicate with providers, access electronic medical records, and even pay bills. The portal can be accessed on smartphone, tablet, and Apple Watch.
